Like some whimsical tale from a hoary Jackanory story, the wranglers at London Zoo are going to have a whale of a time (watch it. Ed) this week counting the animals. The critter census is a mammoth (please, enough. Ed) undertaking; last year's count fingered 750 different species and 14,567 creatures, but with the propensity of our fellow species in the animal kingdom to reproduce like, er, rabbits, that number will have grown through 2009.

The above video, from the Associated Press, shows some of the animals that zookeepers will be auditing, but does feature mild anthropomorphism and a voiceover by a thickly trowelled-on American newsreader accent, so be warned.
