The Colour TV Refuseniks Of Haringey

1501_allypally.jpg Despite the presence of Alexandra Palace, from where the first regular hi-def television broadcasts were transmitted in the 1930s, some parts of Haringey aren't keen to keep up with the medium's trends: over 350 homes still have black-and-white TV licences, more than double the average in other London boroughs. A proud spokesman from the Alexandra Palace Television Group said that the reason was probably down to older people reluctant to switch over, and those who prefer to pay the £48 b/w license fee, which is nearly a hundred quid cheaper than the colour variety. Would it be cynical of us to wonder how many of the inhabitants of these 366 homes scramble to hide that 40" plasma screen in the cupboard every time the TV licence inspector van drives by?
