New Evening Peak Fare On National Rail

oyster_4Jan10.jpg Amidst the joy of getting PAYG on national rail (albeit with a few hiccups along the way), those of us going back to work may not have spotted a nasty little extra: a new evening rush hour peak fare has been added. Rail passengers are used to the idea that travelling after 9.30am is off-peak, but commuters will also have to pay a higher fare coming home between 4-7pm. For example, travelling between zones 1 and 3 costs £2 off-peak on PAYG but £2.60 at peak times, bringing NR into line with the tube peak system introduced last year. Off-peak returns are also being scrapped to encourage people onto Oyster, but this will inevitably end up costing some people more. This PAYG lark's not as simple as we hoped it would be.
