If the last thing you need is more online distraction, look away now. London Transport Museum today launched their film archive online. We've had a quick look and scratched the surface of "All That Mighty Heart" - a day in the life of London as seen by London Transport in 1962. See fleets of Routemaster buses, the control rooms of the tube, early CCTV and plenty of slicked back hair. Watch the children building sandcastles on the banks of the Thames and the Victoria Line being built. See the vintage lights at Piccadilly Circus and possibly your mum on a nightbus. BBC Radio programmes indicate the time of day and a poetic RP voice keeps you in check. Our weekend's viewing is now mapped out for us.
The film collection was inherited from London Transport and features some of those classic documentaries and educational flicks made by British Transport Films in the 1950s and 60s (how to use ticket machines in 1969 and a training film for canteen workers from 1951), but also a broader range of titles for this initial online selection, covering the period from 1910 to 1970.
