After a year in which the Victoria & Albert has already opened two major new galleries — one for Ceramics, the other for an extensive collection of Medieval & Renaissance artefacts — the museum shows no sign of slowing down: management have invited a group of architects to draw up architectural studies for an underground extension.
A study has revealed that building a new underground exhibition space on the Exhibition Road side of the museum, beneath the Sackler galleries, would be feasible. The space would rest on the site of the Libeskind-designed "spiral" extension, a characteristically deconstructivist and controversial design that was abandoned in 2004.
The V&A will make a decision on whether to proceed once it has seen the architects' studies.
