New Fourth Plinth Statue To Be Unveiled
Sir Keith Park
Head down to Trafalgar Square today at 4pm to watch the official unveiling of the latest project to occupy the Fourth Plinth. After Gormley’s conceptual experience, the new piece is of a more traditional bent: a statue of Sir Keith Park, the New Zealand-born RAF commander who directed the squadrons of Allied aircraft at Dunkirk and against the Luftwaffe during the Blitz. The case for Park has become a political point in recent years: many called for his statue on the plinth to become permanent, a movement that Boris backed before performing a customary U-turn. A separate, permanent tribute will instead be erected in Waterloo Place next year. The unveiling is to be commemorated by a fly-past of WW2 planes; we’ve got a nice clear day for it, so it’s eyes to the skies come 4pm.
