Live Music Preview: Blood Red Shoes @ Cro Bar

Blood Red Shoes hit Cro Bar on Manette Street tomorrow night to test out new material at a one-off show. It's virtually impossible to avoid comparing the duo - consisting of Laura-Mary Carter and Steven Ansell - to The White Stripes (such is the lot of male-female guitar-drum acts), but actually their sound is markedly different. So don't expect a pair of Jack and Meg wannabes.

No, Blood Red Shoes have more imagination than that. Carter's jagged guitar steers the sound firmly towards the punky, noisy end of the indie-rock spectrum and her vocals collide with Ansell's forthright drumming in a pleasingly ragged way.

Some of the tracks off first album Doesnt Matter Much have more than a touch of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs about them and last time we saw them we were impressed that so much noise could come from just two people. In a small venue the impact should be impressive. And besides, how often do you get to see a drummer up at the front of the stage?

Blood Red Shoes play Cro Bar on Wednesday 25 November. It's a free show, so arrive early to get in. (Image of Laura-Mary Carter / alternat2 under a Creative Commons Attribution licence.)
