Spurs fans and staff have been calling Tottenham a ‘big club’ for years, despite Premier League evidence to the contrary. Yet this season they’re flirting heavily with the Top Four, and a further sign of their lofty ambitions comes via news that Haringey council have backed their aim to have the proposed new White Hart Lane included as a World Cup 2018 ground. England’s bid has yet to really take off, but Spurs have been quick to manoeuvre their planned new 60,000 seater home onto the shortlist of candidates, where it is joined by 25 other stadia, including, in London alone, Wembley, Emirates, Twickenham and the Olympic Stadium. A tough group, made tougher by the rule that, much like the World Cup itself, only two grounds from any one city can make the final cut.
