Cut And Cover The Chelsea Choice

Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust tops the league tables today with the highest rate of caesarean deliveries in England. 2 in 3 babies are cut out of the womb in west London, compared to a national average of 1 in 4. Many of these are, of course, medically essential but the rate of elective caesareans at Chelsea and Westminster is 3 times higher than the hospital with the lowest rate in England. Several reasonable explanations are offered but given their celebrity alumni it seems many are ‘too posh to push’ and prefer major stomach surgery to bring baby into the world rather than risk the grunting, screaming, panting and pushing of a normal delivery with the attendant mess of after-birth/follow through before the beatific smile for the cover of OK.
