Columbus Tower Gets Mayoral Nod

A new tallest for the Docklands area has been approved by Boris, overturning an earlier decision by Tower Hamlets council. The Columbus Tower (named after a Carry On film, we think) would stretch 237 metres into the Docklands sky, trumping One Canada Square by 2 metres. The project has been on hiatus for many years following financial difficulties and the death of the main investor. A revised planning application in 2008 was the first hint that the tower might be revived. The Mayor's support, using new powers to over-rule the boroughs on projects that affect the whole city - brings with it a promise from the developers to contribute £4 million towards Crossrail, £1 million towards affordable housing and further funds to help with transport and local environment. The slender tower would contain a hotel, private apartments and office space. No word on when construction might start, but commenters over on SkyscraperCities reckon the current occupants of the site have leases until 2012/13.
