Preview: Regent Street Festival

festival1.jpg Anyone who's anyone is celebrating a big birthday at the moment, from Dr. Samuel Johnson's 300th to a considerably more wet behind the ears Londonist. We don't mind sharing the limelight though, because a big birthday means a big party and on Sunday that's exactly what you should expect as Regent Street Festival celebrates it's 10th anniversary and brings along more birthday friends than you could shake a party hat at. This year the festival is being organised along with Absolute Radio who are celebrating their 1st birthday.

As usual, the street will be closed to traffic for the day, but for the first time will host a gig by Madness who are, wait for it... celebrating their 30th birthday. The birthdays just don't stop either; in fact the shopping street itself is celebrating it's 180th, Jaeger it's 125th, Gap's 40, Hamley's is 250, Quicksilver's 40 and Desigual and Uniqlo are both 25 despite being quite late comers to the London shopping scene.

Giant birthday cake (and thousands of cupcakes) aside, there will be plenty to keep you entertained at the festival with many stores offering special discounts and street entertainers galore to keep the kids and tourists amused. Whilst the days activities are completely free, the intention is to raise awareness and money for Cancer UK so keep an eye out for the inevitable stilt walkers swinging buckets at a dangerous height and dig deep.
