The Beatles' Lucy Dies

The school kid who inspired the Beatles song Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds has passed away. Lucy Vodden of Surbiton died aged 46 from the immune system disease lupus. As a child, Lucy attended the same Weybridge school as John Lennon's son Julian. Beatles lore has it that juvenile Julian drew a picture of his classmate, and told his dad: "It's Lucy in the sky with diamonds". The phrase became one of the most famous tracks off the Sgt. Pepper album, not least because of its 'coincidental' initial-sharing with LSD. Later, anthropologists named an early hominid Lucy, after repeated plays of the song during their excavation. The late Mrs Vodden therefore holds the unique accolade of having influenced both a hit record and the fossil record.
