The Leader Of The Pack

More and more Londoners are taking to scooters in an attempt to beat the congestion charge and crowded public transport, according to Motorcycle News.

Upsides? Loads. They're economical to run and insure, easy to ride, c-charge exempt, you can park for nothing in most places (apart from Westminster where introduction of motorbike parking charges has led to protests from the biking community), it's easy to get through traffic jams and if you got your driving licence before 2001, you won't even need to do Compulsory Basic Training (CBT). Downsides? Easier to steal and not being enclosed in a metal box means you need to keep your wits about you when riding.

Scooters of the Lambretta and Vespa variety were beloved of Mods in the 60s and this one from the film Quadrophenia sold last month for £36,000. We reckon that falls slightly outside the cheaper transport bracket but how cool? Nowadays you're more likely to see an office worker atop a Vespa since they became popular again after the introduction of the congestion charge. They're also ideal for beating tube strikes.
