Students Are a Dabbling, Uptails All...

2707.canal.jpg Great thing, enterprise. We're talking the clever, inventive, hard-working variety, not the starship. We just love the story of this med student chappie who's taken a peek at the lovely unused canal abutting his uni, thought 'what a waste', and decided to fill it with bemused tourists. The Herford Union Canal and the Regent's Canal both run near Queen Mary College, and David Carruthers saw the potential for a nice little earner for his summer vacation: punt hire. It may not all be willows and manicured lawns - and thank goodness for that. The East End's industrial heritage is nowhere more obvious than from its waterways, and this is a great way to sample it. Never mind the Slushy green undergrowth/Where the roaches swim, eh? Oxford and Cambridge had better look to their laurels. If this floats your boat, head for the Mile End Road Bridge: hire is available every day, and costs from £15.00 an hour. (Image/che-burashka)
