Live Music Review: Carolina Liar @ Barfly

Amidst a line-up of little-known British bands performing at Camden's Barfly venue last night were an act who may well be performing to much larger crowds in the near future. Carolina Liar have had their songs featured on every American teen show you can think of, and compared by Rolling Stone to U2 and The Killers no less.

Despite this, their Barfly gig was a tame one for the band with only a small group of very young girls rushing to the front when they took to the stage. Clearly few of the main audience had heard of them, but the early adopters were rewarded by a short five song set and the charisma of frontman Chad Wolf trying to whip up the crowd. New single 'Show Me What I'm Looking For' impressed live while the catchiest songs on the album 'Last Night', 'California Bound' and 'I'm Not Over' all proved their worth.

Like the bands to which they've been compared, Carolina Liar would work best in a huge arena or outdoor festival, with a crowd singing every word to their anthemic songs. Hopefully they will achieve that before too long - until then, we'll take last night's performance as a taste of what's to come.

Carolina Liar return to London for a gig at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen on August 20.
