Clubwatch : Recession @ The Boogaloo

Ooh it's been a little while since we've checked out London's best new club nights hasn't it. Well fortunately we've been spurred into action by one of our favourites celebrating a successful first 6 months. Since it launched in February, the Boogaloo's monthly Recession has proved itself to be a must for the credit crunch clubber. The idea is simple - you pay money to get in, but for every hour you stay you get a £1. Tonight is a little different as they've teamed up with Trekstock to put on an extra special night featuring the lovely Alessi's Ark.

When and why did you set

Recession up?

We set up Recession 6 months ago this very week. The idea was to create a clubnight that played great music in a great bar that didn't cost the earth to get in. Normally at our nights we run a policy that you get a pound back for every hour you party, but Thursday's birthday bash is slightly different as it's all for charity...Trekstock.

Who are your DJs? What do they do in the real world?

Sunta Templeton has been a fixture on Xfm Breakfast for a good old while now, talking nonsense in between records and then putting on her serious voice for The News. Jon Ford moved back to London late last year and makes lovely bits of internetness work for the Beeb.

What type of music do you play? What makes it special?

We play an eclectic mix that runs the gamut from the hottest new music of the moment to seductive slices of classic rock action. It's mostly guitar-based but there's always room for a tasty beat...

Have you ever had any celebs on your dancefloor?

The Boogaloo is famed for its status as a North London celeb haunt. You never know who mind wander in!

We like going there for quizzes but does it work for dancing?

It's an intimate relaxed atmosphere that's lack of pretention means whether you're quietly bogling in the corner or throwing some shapes in the middle it always feels like home.

Tell us one artist who we might not have heard of that you play that we should check out?

Our birthday party features a live set from one out recent favourites Alessi's Ark. Still in her teens, the folk-popster brings to mind the likes of Laura Marling, Björk and Bat for Lashes and we bloomin love her.

What other club nights do you like going to in London?

With the Boogaloo as our local we're always nipping in and out for the quality range of nights they put on, and Sunta's always on the decks at various Greater London Club Xfm nights. Elsewhere up the electro scale the Chew The Fat nights never fail to kick ass.

What are your plans for the future?

More bands, more tunes, more fun, more money back in your pocket.

Name five songs we'll definitely be shuffling to tonight

Jarvis Cocker - Angela, Gossip - Heavy Cross, The Joy Formidable - Whirring, TV On The Radio - Crying, Little Boots - New In Town

And your all time favourite floor filler?

Floor filler eh? Some kind of Clash / Hot Chip mash up in heaven should do the trick nicely...

Extra special tickets for tonight's gig and Recession club night can be bought here for £6. It's all for charity innit!
