The ongoing protest by Sri Lankan Tamils in Parliament Square may force organisers to divert Sunday's marathon. The protest, now in its fourth week, calls for an end to military strikes against Tamil separatists in Sri Lanka. The campaign has cost the lives of 6500 civilians, with many more in jeopardy, according to the UN. The London Marathon traditionally passes through Parliament Square, and would be a choice opportunity for protesters to reach a wider audience. Hence, planners are considering an alternative route via Marble Arch. It would not be the first time the race has been diverted. Fires and gas leaks have caused previous last-minute route changes, and organisers have plenty of route changes up their sleeves.
