New Plans On The Way For Battersea Power Station

1003_battersea.jpg The blighted site’s beleaguered owners promise that they’ll file a new planning request by the summer. Since the “eco-dome” design was tossed onto the scrapheap, Treasury Holdings is now planning a scaled-down version with smaller towers. Heck, they may as well throw in a roller coaster with multiple loop-de-loops, a giant-size fully functional toaster to feed the five thousand Battersea-ites in the vicinity with crumblets from heaven, and a statue of a huge fist flipping the bird at the London skyline for all the likelihood that anything will ever come of this project. As our great and good make clear often enough, the city disdains progress, and nothing can possibly be done unless every ‘i’ is dotted and ‘t’ crossed by the myriad reactionaries who don’t want the view of their own private corner of London “spoiled”. “the city disdains progress” – are you crazy? Have you seen the rate of progress around SE1 right now? It’s all new; we’re even sacrificing the character of Borough for “progress”!

Eventually it will be turned into a mosque no doubt; along with Westminster Abbey and St. Paul’s. The smokestacks would make lovely minarets.

Woah, that’s a bit of a curveball there. I thought the Londonist readership was a bit more enlightened than that.

Sounds like someone’s been reading a little too much Mark Steyn.

What do you have against mosques? Islamophobic no doubt.

From what I’ve been seeing in the UK the last few years, the British are more than willing to grovel and cave into any demands made by muslims no matter how ridiculous, including changing the directions of prison toilets so they face the correct way in relation to mecca and it seems that the flag of St George can no longer be displayed freely or with pride anymore lest it offend a muslim as well. To be fair, this rabid political correctness meets dhimmitude is happening in a lot of countries.

I have absolutely nothing against mosques.

However what I do have something against is people spreading ignorant crap. Of course Battersea’s not going to be turned into a mosque, and neither are St Paul’s or Westminster Abbey – but people making ignorant comments such as yours only serves to inflame Islamophobia in this country.

If you’re going to make outlandish claims about prison toilets, please do back it up with a weblink to a credible news source. If you apply a bit of logic, you would realise that any faith (be it Christian, Muslim, Hindu, etc) would find the notion of prayer whilst using the toilet wholly distasteful, so I would venture that you’re talking out of your jacksie on this one.

I’d be most grateful if you could also provide some examples where an organisation was unable to display the St George’s Cross due to religious sensitivity. I think you’ll find the only reason why some organisations may be hesitant to fly the flag is because it has been hijacked by racist extreme right political groups which peddle lies to further their own nationalistic agendas.

…and another. There are plenty more examples but you’ll have to go find them yourself.

I’ll take that as a compliment.
