Like the Metro, the British Library's red brick building on Euston Road is unbelievably 10 years old. But it was designed to last at least 150 years - that's a hell of a job of future proofing the national home of the printed word. We can barely begin to image the intricate bowels below, and we've seen some of them. There are warrens of bookshelves patrolled by an army of mechanical librarian arms, feeding legions of knowledge hungry readers via a baffling network of conveyor belts.
