Football: Chelsea Director Speaks Tonight

We imagine when Chelsea FC's Performance Director agreed to talk at Birkbeck Sports Business Centre's Seminar series tonight he did not imagine that it would be only 48 hours after club manager Luiz Felipe Scolari's dismissal. Given that Big Phil lost his job primarily because the team's results had been unsatisfactory Mr Forde, at Stamford Bridge since August 2007, might face some awkward questions when he speaks at 6pm on the subject of "Creating Sustained Success: Delivering a World Class Player Performance Model for an Elite European Champions League Club".

We should point out, however, that Michael's expertise, as practised to great effect in recent years at Sam Allardyce's Bolton Wanderers, is:

...the development of best practice in the wider business management of the club as a source of competitive advantage... in the club’s application of sports medicine, scouting and player retention strategies, performance analysis and administrative support.

So Forde is more at home in adapting Chelsea from the early cash-rich Abramovich days to the contemporary era of balancing the books and wringing out value for money than he would be deciding on whether or not Didier Drogba should be playing more often which is why he's not planning an impromptu holiday at this moment. Instead Birkbeck's students, and Londonist readers, are fortunate to be able to benefit from his experience for free in Room 101 of the Clore Management Centre in Torrington Square, Bloomsbury at 6pm. In the current climate his views on "How do you build and lead a High Performance Management team?" should be even more than usually salient.

If you'd like to go, you MUST email seminar convenor Sean Hamil ([email protected]) beforehand to check that places are still available.
