The River Wandle wends its way north from Croydon and Carshalton to join the Thames at Wandsworth. It's a chalkstream that was hardworking in Victorian times, a sewer in the 60s and has recently been suffocating in pennywort weed. A clean up operation is on its way - the rampant choking weed doesn't give a fig for weedkiller and has to be hand pulled from the water - and the £50,000 clean-up project is expected to last until the end of February. Meanwhile, some people still see fit to use the river as a flowing dustbin but if you care about Wandsworth's wandering waterway, you can get your wellies out and join monthly clean up sessions in the New Year.
