The ever thought-provoking Birkbeck Sports Business Centre Seminar Series continues this evening with a session given by James McDougall on "Sport in the UK and Europe: A Golden Future or Just Meddling?".

The talk centres on the work of the Central Council of Physical Recreation, a national alliance of 280 governing and representative bodies of sport and recreation in the UK from fencing to folkdance, which aims to present a unified voice for the country's active pasttimes, particularly in the legislative arena. The presentation will also examine the effect of European law, present and future, on sport in this country with particular emphasis on the hot issue of "home" player quotas in national leagues. The speaker is well-placed to give insight on these issues as he is the European and International Policy Officer at the CCPR and sits on various working groups bridging the divide between UK and European sports administration. The event begins at 7pm tonight in Room G01 of Birkbeck College's Clore Management Centre in Torrington Square.

Next Wednesday's seminar will feature the Director of Commercial Enterprises at Manchester United Plc from 1998 to 2005 looking at how football clubs can cope with the credit crunch and the week after will showcase the impact of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) on drug use in elite sport. All these seminars are free and open to the public, though there can be no external reporting of the presentation or discussion without the express permission of the speaker. For further details and full directions, see the Birkbeck web site.
