Dressing up and going out is quite the thing at the moment, but if it seems to be just a fad for the folks who fancy themselves, we must correct you and point out that bling has been big for Londoners for a long time. Take, for example, the icon of cockney London, the shiny Pearly King. Strutting around draped in sparkly stuff is not new.

An evening to celebrate all that is fabulous and fun about the traditional cockney knees-up has been arranged for Thursday night, a genuine East End night out in the East End's most celebrated nightspot, the Bethnal Green Working Men's Club. Cor Blimey brings you sing-songs around the old joanna, pie and mash prizes, some naughty nostalgic striptease, cockney bingo and many many extra verses to old favourites like Knees Up Mother Brown, Any Old Iron and the spoon-jangling tuneful Doing the Lambeth Walk.

This chirpy London love-in has been artfully arranged with the necessary nudges and winks by promoters Lady Lolly La-di-dah & Miss Kim Rub-a-dub-dub (or piano-playing Lorraine Liyage and singer Kim Williamson who have brought nights such as Smack Hits and Club Rub to the nocturnal scene.)

It's a packed programme and is a keen mix of the naughty, nice and nostalgic. Keep an eye peeled for the Pearly King of Camberwell who will be making an appearance on the night with his very own Cockney Barrow Boy. This man is the real deal so gather around for genuine tales of the real cockney London. Then drink lots of gin with him. There'll be a lot of it about, some of it even free for the best dressed guests (bawdy Victoriana, dandy-ish Edwardiana, Gothic or if dare be so bold, pearly are all welcome). Drink lots and lots of gin then 'ave a right old larf. It's traditional.
