Stephen Lawrence Centre Vandalised

Sickening news this morning that the aspirational Stephen Lawrence Centre, which only opened last week, had bricks thrown through its beautifully designed front windows this morning.

It's shocking enough that there are are people out there who are so against a community centre designed and purpose-built to encourage young people, help them out of deprivation and foster better community relations that they feel the need to damage it. Shocking too that this act of pernicious vandalism is targeted at a memorial to a young man who was senselessly murdered. To top it all though, this is the fourth attack on the building.

We don't get it.

Lewisham CID hate crime squad are investigating and security measures at the Centre are being reviewed. We wait to hear if the 8 broken windows, designed by artist Chris Ofili and reportedly worth £15,000 each, will be replaced or whether the Centre will sadly feel the need to replace them with something more resilient.
