Londonist Stays In - New Years Eve

Well, here it is. New Year’s Eve. We’ve told you where to go for fireworks, and where to go dancing, but you may not be feeling up for the whole NYE hullabaloo. If that’s the case, or if you’re feeling very ambitious and hosting your own celebration at home and are in need of background telly, here are a few things you might want to take a peek at.

On TV, Londonist likes:

New Year Live (BBC1, 23:10-00:15) The Beeb rings in the New Year with the fireworks over the Thames with Nick Knowles.

Jools’s Annual Hootenanny (BBC2, 23:05-01:15) Jools pulls together an impressive group of musicians for his end of year bash. Kylie, Paul McCartney, Kaiser Chiefs, Kate Nash, Madness, Seasick Steve and Mika are just a few of the names that will be ringing in the New Year with Jools. This is definitely our pick for NYE viewing. It’s called a hootenanny! Who can resist that?

Countdown to Midnight: Take That and Guests Live at the O2 Arena (ITV1, 23:15-00:45) As the inventive title suggests, Take That and guests including Sugababes help to ring in the New Year. Unless you’re a die hard Take That fan, we’d recommend tuning into Jools.

Hogmanay Celebrations (Sky News, 23:30-00:00) Live coverage of both the Hogmanay celebrations from Edinburgh and the fireworks on the Thames. If you’re not into presenters and singing for your New Years celebrations, this is for you.

Greatest Ever 80s Movies and Seriously Dirty Dancing (Five, 21:00-23:50 and 23:50-00:50) Five goes with non-traditional New Years scheduling, and gives us a countdown show of the greatest films from the cheesiest decade, and a documentary looking into the making of the cheesiest (and one of the best) 80s film of them all. Nobody puts Baby in the corner – especially on New Years Eve.
