Watch Out For Wilton's

Nestled somewhere between the Novae Archaelogical Site, Bulgaria, the Darbush Tomb, Eritrea, the Capitanes Generales Palace, Guatemala and 96 other gravely endangered world monument sites sits an unassuming East End Music Hall.

Wilton’s Music Hall was included today on the World Monument Watchlist of 100 Most Endangered sites for 2008. The watchlist raises global awareness of monuments of significant artistic, architectural, historic or social value that require urgent attention; without which they will disappear.

Consisting of four connected Georgian terraced houses in Tower Hamlets with a double-height auditorium running behind them, Wilton’s is thought to be the last remaining example of a mid-Victorian London music hall and:

...the last remnant of an urban cultural landscape that has either been destroyed as a result of World War II or by slum clearances during the 1960s

Despite the fact that only 40% of Wilton’s is currently safe for public access, the Blitz spirit is alive and well, persevering with showbiz regardless of dodgy structure, threat of vandalism and a leaky roof. Brand new resident company, Transition Opera, will be staging a baroque-multimedia production of one of Handel’s early opera’s at the end of June "Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno" (The Triumph of Time and Truth) apparently featuring some of the most ravishing music he ever composed. They’re also hosting bits of this month’s Spitalfield’s Festival and July’s City of London Festival.

This fella’s not falling down without a 21st century fight.

Help save Wilton’s here.
