Londonist Test Drives...Salsa Dancing

salsa2.jpg

Everybody should learn at least one dance in their lifetime, and for maximum impact it has got to be Salsa. Releasing your inner Cuban in downtown London is easier than you think but to the Londonist’s mind there is no better place to pick up this fiery quick-step than at the bi-weekly classes held at Pineapple Dance Studios in Covent Garden. The class is taught by Sai Lee, Salsa and UKA British Mambo Champion, choreographer and co director of the Salsa Connexion Dance Company. He is a leading UK and International Salsa Instructor and has been dancing Salsa for 11 years so trust us when we say that your left feet are in good hands.

Monday's class is from 8-9pm and aimed at beginners and improver Salseros. Friday's Salsa class is from 7-9pm consisting of four levels, aimed at beginners, improvers, intermediates right through to advanced level and what’s best is you don’t even have to bring a partner, just some comfy shoes and the ability to laugh at yourself. The class starts with a warm up, and you swap dance partners throughout and can nail the basic Cuban/Colombian salsa steps in less than an hour. You learn everything via the doctrine of ‘repetition, repetition, repetition’ so by the end of the class many of the moves feel intuitive and you will be sashaying all over the dance floor, in the embrace of a total stranger feeling pretty smug about your fancy foot work. We at Londonist are a bunch of malcoordinated buffoons but this class’ relaxed vibe and top draw teachers even gave us the impression that we could audition for Strictly Come Dancing. And because both classes finish at such a sociable time you can always go grab a drink with your class mates afterwards or cruise on to a Salsa bar to get some sneaky practice in before your next lesson. All classes cost £6.
