The Coolest Woman In the World

The Coolest Woman In the World
Beth Ditto

Last time we wrote about a list the NME had published, they tried to sue us. This time we're actually impressed by what they've written. Yes, it's time for that all important 'how cool am i today list' aka the NME 2006 Cool List. Instead of people like Pete Doherty and Alex Turner, who ruled the roost last year, this years list is surprising. It's topped by a woman: a woman who is not self-admittedly fat, but is, shock horror, a lesbian.

Yup, Beth Ditto - the amazing voice behind the - plugging away for years but now finally someone has taken notice - Gossip has been crowded the coolest person in the world by the NME. We think she's pretty cool too, after all she's had Soulwax scratching away on a song about gay marriage rights for a whole year, so to that we raise our glases. Unfortunately the list comes a cropper almost immediately with #2 awarded to Faris Rotter of The Horrors. He might have quite exciting hair, but can anyone tell anyone more than 2 facts about this man? Scrapping in at #50 was Amy Winehouse whose recent antics would put her straight into Faris' position if we were to compile such a chart.

We approve:

1 Beth Ditto (The Gossip)

3 Lily Allen

4 Jarvis Cocker

7 Kate Jackson (The Long Blondes)

10 Lovefoxxx (CSS)

14 The House Of Lords (The Young Knives)

15 Tahita Bulmer (New Young Pony Club)

34 Lupe Fiasco

45 Victoria Bergman (Ex-The Concretes)

49 Thorunn Antonia (Fields)

50 Amy Winehouse

We scrunch up our noses

2 Faris Rotter (The Horrors)

28 Pete Doherty (Babyshambles)

29 Brandon Flowers (The Killers) [we like him, we just think he's like a very uncool uncle]

We mainly want to know why Gwenno isn't on this list, but failing that who would you be in yours?

HARRRRY

I saw Gwenno at Art Brut's Mean Fiddler gig last week, looking as dreamy as ever.

Eamon from Brakes ought to be up there. Indeed, Eddie Argos deserves a spot, too.
