Event of the Week

Taking chances at the Royal Statistical Society tonight.

We cannot guarantee correct decisions at every turn…but humans seem to find it hard to reach sound conclusions, or even decide what information is relevant, in many situations involving uncertainty.

Now why does that blurb for tonight’s RI event make us think of the Metropolitan Police? Whether it’s WMD intelligence, armed officer deployment or just which horse to back, we’re all faced with questions of probability on a daily basis. How can we take a logical approach to turn probability to our advantage? The dusty, school-hall-like headquarters of the Royal Statistical Society are the apt setting for tonight’s talk entitled ‘Taking chances’. And, if you can decide between red or white, there’s a complimentary glass of wine for you afterwards.

Elsewhere

Look into my eyes, look into my eyes, the eyes, the eyes, not around the eyes, don't look around the eyes, look into my eyes. You are now under my control. You do like semolina, and those dubious looking chipolatas are made with prime cuts of pork. Yes, it’s another Dinner at Dana, tonight focussed around the subject of hypnotism. You will eat up all your sprouts, even if you don’t realise it.

Two more events at the Dana Centre. Tomorrow, they’re all ears with an evening devoted to matters of hearing. Did you know that ‘the loudest sound a human ear can tolerate is about a million times greater than the quietest noise it can hear‘. Or that you can tell a person’s accent just from watching facial movements? Sounds interesting. Finally, on Tuesday, the Punk Science team are back for one of their regular wry looks at recent science news.
