God Bless Alan Bennett

There's an interview with the brilliant Alan Bennett over in the Boston Globe newspaper.

Of course they're mainly talking about the huge success of Bennett's The History Boys on Broadway right now, but right at the end of the article there's a mention of Bennett's preferred mode of transport which should put a smile on the face of anyone in London who's fed up with all the negative cycling stories flying around at the moment:

Today, Bennett looks more than a decade younger than his actual age. A lifelong cyclist, he still pedals around London. It takes him about 20 minutes to get from his house to the West End, he said.

''You always know when you're going to arrive," he said. ''If you go by car, you don't. Apart from anything else, I prefer cycling. It puts you in a good mood, I find."

Amen to that. Next time a white van cuts us up in the middle of Vauxhall Cross we're going to take a deep breath and think of Alan. The capital needs more people like him.

Thanks to Velorution for the link.
