Wait a minute, Mr Postman

Another festive story to warm your cockles...

A postman who stole chequebooks used in a £20m nationwide fraud ring is facing a lengthy jail sentence. Dido Mayue-Belezika, 34, from Camden, was said to be behind the scam, over which 24 people were charged.

This is what happens when you don't give the posty a well deserved Christmas tip.

Londonist used to live near a sorting depot once and each morning we'd take the same shortcut as the postal workers and often trip over piles of discarded mail. Takes you back to the days of when Viz used to be funny.

It is thought thousands more chequebooks were intercepted from sorting offices around the country, but the size of the investigation meant police had to concentrate on the Golders Green operation. Detective Inspector Murray Duffin said: "We got 220 suspects and stopped counting."

Bit of a relief for the 221st person in the ring then.

The posties around Thornton Heath are thieving scum.

One spring morning I caught up with one (who'd just posted bills for everyone in the house, except me) asked if anything was for me. He said no, also there hadn't been any post for me for the past week or so. Thirty meters later down the road I saw an envelope addressed to me - opened, contents extracted.

A woman who'd seen this whole exchange agreed to be my witness: the postie looked terrified as I dialled post office HQ and, fingers crossed, nowt's been nicked since.

Tsk - typical chequebook journalism.
