The barge which once bore the coffin of Sir Winston Churchill is up for grabs. The Havengore can be yours for as little as £1.3 million. That’s roughly the same as four Notting Hill garages, or 86 000 Winston Churchill action figures.

Havengore carried Churchill’s body between Tower Pier and Festival Pier on 20 January 1965.

Since being restored in the 1990s, the small craft has been used, in true Churchillian style, to promote awareness of democracy, citizenship and leadership, particularly amongst the young. Most recently, it took part in events marking the 60th anniversary of the end of WWII.

But now, on the eve of another anniversary, 40 years since Churchill’s death, the craft is about to change hands. Owners HELM look like they’re going to go down with their ship. All the money has gone and the boat has to go too. Get your bids in on 15 December, when the auction takes place at Sotheby’s.
