Update: Gwynnie Loves London, Honest

Plate-faced actress Gwyneth Paltrow has reacted angrily to reports that she "slammed London". Er, what? It's right there in black and white, blondie - unless you'd like to sue Marie Claire US for misquoting you. In a classic display of doublethink, Gwyneth hopes to deflect the criticism she has attracted for her objectionable comments by insisting that her words have been misinterpreted - when it's actually pretty clear exactly what she thinks. War is peace, hate is love, London is "dirty" and "rubbish" and simultaneously a better place than Bush's United States to raise a (growing?) family. In fact, says Miss Paltrow:

"The British press are just ridiculous. I've never said anything like that. I don't know where they get off, making up these mean things. But they do."

Aaah, how about a big group hug for the poor persecuted darling? There, there, that's better. How dare those nasty journos report something you actually said as though it were fact? How rude! And, one might say, how very English.

Love it though we may let's be honest. London can be very dirty. And, the customer service is spotty at best. Why else are we all opting to shop on the internet to the detriment of high street sales? (there are other factors I know but I'm convinced service is one of them). I think the press is having a very boring day indeed when Gwynnie's comments make such a palaver.

Tamara - I know what you mean, but I can't help thinking that it's like when you're slagging off your mum, and then someone agrees with you that hey, yes, your mum is a cow, and you get really pissed off with them, even though you were saying the exact same thing the minute before. Gwyneth hasn't been here long enough to count as a 'real' Londoner, I don't think. And if it's so dreadful here, she could always, you know, leave ...

Jo - love the way you're choosing the least-flattering photos of Mrs Martin in your posts about her :D

Least-flattering?! I think she looks genuinely sexy here.
