With Halloween traditionally a time for some serious gig going spectaculars, this year's a little bit of a damp squib, what with Marilyn Manson retiring from creeping folks out and concentrating on his new make up range and his Alma Mater, Alice Cooper, not yet in town, it would seem as if we're going to have to keep the Slipknot masks in the drawer for another year.

There are some big shows in town this week, the NME's 02 spectacular with the Kaiser Chiefs, Maximo Park and The Cribs tonight and Thursday, Bloc Party on Friday, both at Brixton, the Dandy Warhols at Hammersmith Palais tonight, Sufjan Stevens at King's College on Monday and Tuesday and Mr Scruff at the Forum on Friday. All sold out but if so if you don't fancy paying well over the odds to that scary looking bald bloke then see what's going at face value over on Scarlet Mist

Tonight: One of London's finest young folkers, and one of Londonist's favourite albums of the year, The Eighteenth Day Of May play Pop Vulture at the Luminaire, six on the door, folk at eight.

If you fancy a little more pounding for your evening then fine London rockers, Kaibosh, will be hitting the Purple Turtle stage over the road from Koko at 8. They guarantee no German 'colloquials', you'll have to head down to see what on earth they mean by that.

Thursday: Another folk night for you down at St Mary's Crypt where Fiona Bevan will be supporting Mark Alder. We'll be bringing you more new about Fiona soon but for the moment comparisons with Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell and Beth Orton will have to suffice.

Friday: It's the jazz-blues indie pop of The Colonies at Inn On The Green. No idea where that is, well in their own words: Easy to find, just head up Portobello Road turn left under the Westway and it's a few doors down. The nearest tube is Ladbroke Grove. It's £2 with one of their yellow flyers and they're likely to slip one in your hand if you try pay the full £4. If that don't happen then you'll make it all back on the 'community project' beer prices.

Saturday: Down at the Mean Fiddler, Frog are throwing a Halloween party, although we're not quite sure how The power-pop punk Paddingtons are going to be dressing up. Should you wish to head down to Tottenham Court Road in full on zombie makeup you'll at least get in for a fiver. Doors a full sixty minutes before the witching hour and Neil's Children in support.

Sunday: Erm... how about you trawl through all our Monday album reviews and find something new to listen to.

Halloween: Well Simply Red are back at the RAH, which is pretty much frightening enough for anyone. We still fondly remember the days when Mick Hucknall was described as looking like the bastard offspring between a leprechaun and the creature from Predator. You'd be better off trying to find tickets for Patrick Wolf's lupine Halloween ball at the Scala. Think of an English Damien Rice - Jeff Buckley and you won't be far off his broken acoustic sound.

Tuesday: Vancouver five piece, The Organ bring their Joy Division / Cure inspired beautiful melancholia to Water Rats in support of their new single Let The Bells Ring.

Over at the Purple Turtle, Croydon's piano hammering indie punks The Della Roccas should be treating all and sundry to one of their legendary live shows. We think you should listen to some Della Roccas here.
