Free Stuff That Doesn't Involve Booze Or Food

It's January. You're skint and slightly heavier than you were this time last month. You've probably sworn off the booze for a bit and if you see another box of Cadbury's Heroes you're likely to throw up.

So, in the spirit of the post-Xmas period, here's a quick list of free stuff to do in London that doesn't involve chocolate liquers or stilton.

- The Schweppes Photographic Portrait Prize is still on at the National Portrait Gallery. Well worth going to see.

- Admission to the public gallery at the Old Bailey (pictured), or Central Criminal Court as it's more properly known, is still free and you can still get into the strangers' gallery at The House of Commons after 10 Jan when Parliament reconvenes (as long as you're not Otis Ferry).

- Go on a quiz show or just sit in the audience for one. Be On Screen.com has all the details of shows looking for contestants or audience members. Just don't sign up for one of the many reality TV shows...you know it will end in tears.

- There's always a tonne of lectures going on in the capital, but this one looks particularly interesting. "Do other social species declare war on each other and can we learn anything from them about how to live together in peace?". We have no idea, but we'd like to find out.

- If you didn't get just what you wanted for Christmas then maybe a visit to Must-Have Toys at the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green will placate you. Oooh Mr Potato Head!

- Matisse to Freud is the art collection of film critic Alexander Walker, showing at the British Museum until 9 Jan. Arguably the only decent thing to ever come out of the Evening Standard.

If you know of any interesting, free things happening in the next few weeks please let us know via the Comments section...we're bored.
