Two of Londonists favourite 'arty' events of the year are both at the National Portrait Gallery - they are the BP Portrait Awards and the Schweppes Photographic Portrait Prize.

Ok, so we like portraits. Nothing wrong with that is there?

The Schweppes prize opens today, and judging by the website the standard looks even better than last year's inaugral event (which was pretty damn good).

The winner of this year's £15,000 has already been widely reported, but if you want to keep it a surprise, look away from your screen...NOW!

The winner was German photographer Jens Lucking for his portait of a trio of Japanese school-girls, entitled Tokyo".

Although Londonist has to admit that we actually prefer the winner of the Deloitte's sponsored section of the exhibition (pictured), Untitled by Paul Pews.
